Error “OLE error code 0x80131534: Unknown COM status code.”

Another flavor of AccountMate dependency on the local workstation operating environment. OLE (Object Linking & Embedding) / COM (Component Object Model) is when one program is “linking” to another program for a function.

The Symptom

This error occurs most often when previewing or printing a report with a logo—such as a Sales Order, Packing Slip, Pick List, Customer Invoice or Purchase Order, but can appear other times as well:

OLE error code 0x80131534: Unknown COM status code.

The Solutions

If the error occurs during “general operation” of the program, such as when kicking off the Aatrix tax forms for 1099/W-2 reporting, then the solution is to exit and restart AccountMate so Windows has “clean memory”..

If the error occurs during previewing a report then Crystal Reports is calling another program for rendering the logo—based on the “file extension” (BMP, JPG, etc.) of that logo graphics file—and expecting that “other program” to be MS-Paint, but it’s not!

Installing another program (like Photoshop or other graphics editing program) can be change the default program for the file extension of your logo. So, the solution is to assign the default program BACK to MS-Paint.

Here’s the steps to change the application file extension associations in Windows 11:

1. Hit “Windows Search” (the magnifying glass in the lower right of your Windows task bar) and type in “Settings“. This will open the “Settings” screen.

2. Click on the “Apps” option about halfway down the list. This will bring up a list on the right-hand side of the screen.

3. Click on the “Default Apps” option in that right-hand pane. You’ll now have a screen where you can set the default app either “By File/Link Type” or “By Application”. Easiest is “By Application”.

4. Scroll down and click on “Paint”. On the right you’ll now have a list of the file extensions that COULD be opened by Paint and what the default program for each currently is.

5. You’ll want to change “the one that matches the file type of your logo” to Paint by clicking on the “up-arrow in a box” button in top right of the file extension that needs reset—which is probably BMP, GIF, or JPEG, JPG or PNG.
